my question concerns the 1108 motor.
I need a post '86 R5 with a transverse motor lowish diff & high torque 1108cc spec.
My son wants an R4 with just a bit more go than the GTL(spec from R5 above but
keeping high diff!?)
question. which is easyiest/possible 1. change motors over/at bell housing ?
2. strip both motors to change,cam/head & carb set ups ?

comment. a post 86 R5 with 30bhp@ 4000rpm sounds a bit stupid,but for car trials ?!
& 45bhp at 5500rpm would make a pleasant R4 GTL?

Would be easier to fit the bigger carb and manifold from a R5,

You'd get most of the Hp difference just by doing that, my 4l flies with this set up!

Yes I quite agree pepper. As well as the 32mm carb and manifold I also fitted electronic ignition and a slightly larger bore stainless steel exhaust system. The result is a nice little performer plus good fuel economy.

thanks for that guys; pepping up the Gtl is the easy bit. glad to hear a simple carb change is effective.
I think we will agree to buy a 79 Gtl,runner/no rust but re paint of Green would sort it. (in house)For the
sum of 300euros=£240.
finding the info on de tuning/improving chugability of the 5 transverse(1108cc) will have to go on the back burner!

I'm not sure if you're thinking of putting a later transverse 5 engine into a 4l or you're buying a post 86 Renault 5?

hello pepper
the idea was to aquire 2 vehicles 1 R4 Gtl
2 a post 86 transverseR5

then swap the following bits: head, cam& carb/manifold

why? brighter get up & go for the R4 & an engine in the transverse R5 that will pull its socks off
from 500rpm. which is ideal for prod trials(climbing up slippery grassy slopes& cambers)

both engines are 1108cc but are they the same?
not a lot of info available;so I could be dreaming!? But an experience driving a Gtl up a Vineyard
just outside Strasbourg 25 years ago has haunted me !!
even with its high 1st this incredible little car just refused to stall ! I want that in an R5,
with its transverse motor/lower final drive etc
I hope you understand ?
cheers

Engines aren't the same, hence why I was asking!

Waterpumps are at different ends cam shafts are totally different loads of reasons why it's just no.

thanks pepper
I had heard things were different, even that they rotated in opposite directions!?
but no one confirms or seems to publish specs.
got another question. do the lower final drive ratios of the 850 or even the 750 fit
the 1108 Gtl ? If so,do you know the different ratios?
>Secondly,I believe the rear suspension is torsion? How would you raise the rear end?

There are lots of different ratio boxes but can't use 850 as engine runs wrong way
depending on country specs on boxes change from year to year so you will need to lookup code numbers whether you will then find box you want depend on luck

thankyou for that info mr reno 139,
a stupid question....where will one find the code numbers? I asked our local Renault garage &he looked at me as if I was one short ofa picnic!?
(the french do that a lot)
from a purely practical aspect, surely the commercial version must have a lower final drive than the std Gtl? otherwise, look for country's
predominently full of mountains?
I'll try an e mail to Renault HQ!

There's normally a disc attached to the top of the gear box by one of the top cover bolts
