2000 Laguna 1.6RT Sport Starting Problems

Sometimes it starts.

Sometimes not. When it doesn't, if I persist for several minutes cranking the engine eventually it will start.
Not related to damp/fuel load/spark.

Renault said I needed a new Key with a new code, Cheers coz that also didn't work.

I'm worried my ECU is faulty, I've heard that the crank sensor may be giving duff information to the ECU even though it appears to be reading correct and that re-seating the crank sensor may reset ECU value and hopefully start the car. Or perhaps the ECU just isn't interpreting

However it ALWAYS starts if the engine has been running recently, if left for a while it might or might not start.

I've had new air inlet valve aswell. That's just screwed my idling up, now it's eratic!

Has anyone experienced this or can offer any help? if you can you can have my car for free when i'm finished with it!

engine not starting

hi dave,
i also have a w reg renault megan ,and are having exactly the same problem.
mine started in the summer, not starting up on the odd occasion.
over the past 2 months it has been letting me down alot .
its always from a cold engine, at least 10 tries before it fires up.
once its been running its ok.
as its getting worse i took it to my local tuning place ,it passed on the machine showing no faults.
we then thought it was the immobiliser,so i took that off and put a slave on to see if that was the problem.
the car started for 10 days then back to square one.
so its not that either, i can now have on the immobiser again.
i am going to put cleaner in the petrol tank and give it a run down the motorway,to see if its chocked up somewhere.
ive been told i dont do enough miles , this could be the problem .
failing that ill have to go to renault ,and i didnt want to do that .
regards , sue.

will be crank sensor. just renew it. im a renault specialist by trade and have replaced loads and loads for the same problems your having. they come with a modified connector which you solder to the loom. around £50 for both items

I appreciate both responses, I think I'll have another word with the garage to go ahead with crank sensor and loom. They said they would absorb the cost of this due to the expense I've gone to without a resolve, this is probably my last throw of the dice or I'll probably scrap the car.

Sue I appreciate what you're saying about the Renault dealers, once the car hits a certain age it is prohibitive spending a lot of money on diagnosis and repairs! My car is in good condition and without the problem might be worth £800-£900, I've just spent £315 on diagnosis and replacement parts including replacement Renault key and code.
