Hello all, if this request is not in the right place please accept my apologies.

I need advice on renewing/replacing the seat covers and door card material on my R4 GTL . I have looked at Franzose and melun re getting covers in the original check material.

Has anyone bought the covers from either of them and if so what are they like ?

Has anyone had there seats recovered by someone else and got a good result ? I don't mind changing from the original and indeed would maybe like something different.

I also like the original vinyl on the TL,s

Thanks Stan.

Stan, I had a fantastic repair done by a local upholsterer for peanuts, in black vinyl. But still have a problem with the structure of the underlying springing and need to have something done to rebuild them.
I've not discovered anyone yet who can repair them. JJ

This probably isn't of much use but all the same....

Years ago I had a pair of high back R5 TS seats that were in a right state but a trimmer in Stockport replaced all the foam and retrimmed them in blue with yellow piping (matched the car y'see) and did a brilliant job. Its probably the best part of twenty years ago so that isn't of much help but if you can find a local trim place (which might be easier said than done given your location) then I reckon it shouldn't be that hard.

Wish I still had those seats though...

Excellent guys that's the kind of info I need it will give me an idea of what I can or cannot do, re local trimmers we just don't have any hence the request.

Stan - Similar... I'd like really to have something different. To this end I checked out the local Coachtrimmers. They are capable of doing an excellent job but unfortunately the price is out of the window at around £1K for the seats and door cards.

My solution (though yet to be implemented) is a halfway house.........

The door cards are relatively easy to reproduce. Even by old mums with thier Singer Sewing machines -being two dimensional.

So Im purchasing plain tan car seat re-covers from the web at £200

But making my own door cards in complimentary fabrics to 'lift' it all a bit.
I have in mind Dark Brown suede effect (Alcantara) for the top and bottom horizontal bands with a contrasting Plaid in the centre band.

Yep they look good, I have asked them if they do sets for a later car as they say they are for pre 1980.
Might be the same I don't know.

A wee update to this one !
The guy that was powder coating my alloys in conversation was very kind to put me onto an upholsterer in the north of Scotland, I thought, oh brilliant, so I sent the seats down to him and asked him for a price to recover them in what I would call a fake leather.
He phoned yesterday with a price. Oops. He thought the least it would be would be £1700 and the most £2200 as you can imagine I think that really is too much for my wee R4 especially considering the amount I have already spent.

I have two options that I know of.

One is Der Franzose and just go back to original for about £500

The other is the guy in France on ebay with seat covers Bouzigue34, but there's not a huge difference in price so I think possibly better going with der franzose unless anyone can tell me any different.

£2200 to do what? A place I've been talking with charges £250 a seat O.o

To answer your question sorry, he was going to recover the front and back seats plus the door cards to match

They are going to do me a deal on the two front seats, bench and door cards, I'm thinking its gunna set me back about £1000 to £1500 because there is a set look I want that isn't Renault 4 standard (Not sure what might be out of the factory when my R4 sees the road again ._.) Might be because of the cost of the material itself which was the killer.

I can not believe how expensive upholstery is "up" there

Guy here in Vodice will change vinyl on my old seat covers. Middle part (tartan) will stay the same, but vinyl will be new.
I have even bought "piping" for edges.

When i include material, work, and installation on seats price will not go over 2000kn (some 200 GBP)

In that price is not included door trims. But I believe all work on door trim would not cost more than 500-600kn more (50-60 GBP)

Thanks for that HS, I've had a look through the site, they have a lot of bits for the R4.

Hi Stan I am clearing out more stuff and have a set of R5 seats in black velour with red piping to sell. Front seats are high back with built in headrests rear seat is probably a bit wider than R4 but material can be swapped and excess removed and re trimmed by anyone with a sewing machine. They have never been used. Front seats bolt straight into R4 mounts. They are out of a posh R5 perhaps a TX. Got to be worth £150. If not urgent I will be in Aberdeen sometime next year and can deliver, may even make it to Orkney!
