Hello

Could anyone help me with advice please.
I`m planning 1200km long trip next month (Slovenia-Netherlands) with 1986 R4 GTL that has 65ooo km.
What should i check before i go (on car), what could go wrong, are there any spare parts that i might need with me..
I know its very reliable car but in case something goes wrong i dont want to look for mechanic in Germany.

Any advice will be welcome.

Thank you.

Check the oil and water levels and tyre pressures would be the main things. If the car hasn't been serviced recently or isn't running well it could be worth servicing it (points, oil change), but be sure you know how to do it as getting the points wrong could cause problems.

I normally just check the oil and water levels before a long trip. I don't take any spares, but a few basic tools can be handy.

Use the lead replacement additive in the petrol to protect the valve seats. They are OK on short trips, but a long trip will burn the valves if you don't use the additive.

My advice on spares you should carry:

Contact points- condenser - spark plug lead - distributor cap
Fuel hose
Radiator top and bottom hoses
Throttle - clutch cable
Fuses-headlamp bulbs

Also make sure the jack has not stuck solid and the spare tyre is inflated (silly advice, but both have hapened to me!)
You have the advantage that your R4 has very kow mileage, and that you are travelling across countries with very strong R4 background (Germany, Holland), so you can find help and know-how easily (I hope you will not help either!)

Have a nice trip!

I think, it´s better to replace the mentioned parts before the trip, when they look suspiciously (or the date of the replacement is unknown) and spare the time on the trip for sights, adventures, drinks, girls, etc. and not spend the holiday under the car :)

Krpan - have a nice trip to Holland!

Two thumbs up to Pavel!

But you must always remember that spare parts in a car are there to defeat Murphy's law (if you have a perfect spare tyre, perfectly working jack etc you are never going to have a flat!) :-D
