Hi out there, having fitted my replacement engine, then had to remove gearbox to free off clutch refitted gearbox engine sweet as a nut, drives with clunk and lurch ,checked everything twice again looks fine she freewheels fine could it be the driveshaft because I did not clamp it up during the work?Best Alan:(

Not yet.

Tomorrow I will start to dig deep, been bit of a long haul in out shaking all the bits about but tommra is a new day. Going to try jacking up and running in gear ,in the air, will keep you posted.

have you refitted the top part of the engine mount under the manifold, could be that

Never touched the engine mounts! never touched the car either!Horrilble day broken guttering her indoors took charge.Who said tomorra never comes.

How did you replace the engine without touching the engine mounts? I'm very confused

drive shaft

If the drive shaft inner end has come apart inside the boot it can drop off one of the rollers and then go back into postition, this gives excessive play which will cause a clunk. If you clamp mole grips on to the shaft with the car jacked up in gear you can check movement in the inner joint and by holding the grips and rocking the wheel you can check for play in the outer joint. Try the outer with the front wheels turned and straight.

Hi,thanks for your interest folks. The engine came straight out complete with engine mounts attached I undid the mounts from underneath.Discoverd the clunks came from where the steering arms go through the inner wings, there is a tool for holding steering arms whilst tightening ,pays to read the manual ! The driveshafts are the existing 747 ones, not sure they mate up with 850 engine and box,the hub on the gearbox end of shaft isnot going far enough into the box and I have leaks on both sides. The car stopped abruptly also that took some time to sort, had not tightened dizzy clamp.Tommorows another day.Best

Alls well the chap who assisted me refitting the drive shafts put the pins in while I lifted and pushed hubs in,did not line the holes up correctly in fact not at all put pins in before the shaft was home!!! plonker best he carries on restoreing antiques and goes to spec savers .Best
