Alternator wiring help

My first post of many...

I have brought a 86 R4 GTL and drove it back from London last Friday. Whilst driving along the charge light came on and off occasionally. Found that the alternator wasn't charging so went and purchased a new alternator which I have fitted.

Now the question - could somebody take a look at the wiring as when I connect the battery I get a load of sparks that looks like a short and I don't trust that this isn't what killed the original alternator as I am sure that the wiring matches.

Thanks in advance.

Could the bracket touching the alternator be a problem?

Well I've just had a quick look at my alternator on my 1984 R$ GTL and I do not have any of the wires that you have on the right hand side of your alternator.
I just have those on the left hand side and the two in the middle, perhaps some other member can help you, because I know as much about the wiring as you do.
sorry I could not have been more helpful.

Hi, the bracket touching isn´t an electric problem, there is earth on the alternator body as well as on the bracket, but you should it let down little bit. The spark on battery contacts pointed to that the ignition or an other appliance (lights, radio, etc.) was on.

There is no more adjustment available in the alternator mount. Everything was turned off, there is no radio or clock.

Wiring on this alternator should be like this:
B-: one wire on the body, the other on battery (-) (or both on body, or one on body, other on engine etc-but always to ground).

Two terminal connector: one field winding (should have +12V when ignition ON), other to charge warning light.

B+: One wire should go to battery (+) terminal, the other to fusebox or ignition switch.
Check carefully why there are two more wires there, someone may have fitted auxiliary equipment which should be powered directly from battery. Check that these are not shorted.

Can anyone recommend a good souce of DUCELLIER 514012D alternators - two that I have tried don't fit correctly, one just about fits the other doesn't go anywhere near fitting.

Three years old now. Did you solve your alternator problem? If so, why not tell everyone please?

Ok, nothing heard. My R4GTL is fitted with a Ducellier Type 514012D alternator and ever since I bought the car, the alternator warning light intermittently comes on. The big puzzle however is that there seems to be nothing wrong with the charging and the battery is good condition. Could this simply be a warning light fault, I wonder?
