It fell out from the shroud under the steering column – complete with broken bit of white plastic...

The only thing inside the shroud usually is the flasher unit Keith, but this looks a bit too elaborate for the bracket for that. Very strange

is it part of a picture frame where you hang it, slot for a nail so you can balance it, and triangular at an angle to get a picture hook through
