Finally made a start on the backplate replacement but was puzzled by what appeared after removal of the hub. It's definitely a Girling backplate but the shoes and adjuster don't seem to correspond with the relevant diagrams in Haynes. They do seem to fit a pre-83 diagram in the Peter Hussek manual but this is an 86 car. Note the new AX backplate awaiting fitting.

And this is half an hour's progress - all released with one squirt of WD40 apart from the brake pipe - it's looking like it might put up some resistance so I've left it to soak for the moment.

The brakes are Bendix. They are the common type for the GTL - have you got the supplement at the end of the Haynes manual that covers the GTL? The Girling brake cylinders are different to the Bendix ones. Does the AX backplate offer a choice of Bendix vs Girling? You can tell which it is by the hole spacing for the brake cylinder bolts.

**do y have type "E" or type "F" brake pipe ends?
- someone having a clear explanation with photos of the differencies
F=Flares?, i found a Beagle's sthread from jan 2008 with photos, then E type must be cone -like or funnel?

I did get rigth pipe end disaster when opening it with unproper tools.I tried to disconnect short pipe, but only with result that i plopped also the rear hose.
(i had to use torch+ cold spray -50°C, but when sprayng the cold rubber hose exploided and sounded like braking glass.

Now i am vey unhappy with this result, not been able to disconnect other end of the

So, having purchased cylinders and shoes on the basis that these were Girling brakes - having as they do the Girling lip on the backplates (Water drain aperture in Haynes-speak - pages 288 and 289 in Chapter 12 have the relevant diagrams) - closer inspection has now revealed that the AX backplates are slightly different - in terms of the shoes fixing points. The new Girling cylinders do fit though so it looks like I'll be doing a Girling conversion.

No doubt there will be pitfalls. :(

Meanwhile the brake pipe remains attached so I've no idea yet what type it is.

Brake pipe flares on the rear arm pipes are always DIN "double flare" ("funnel" as orsome calls them).
