Hi all,

just bought a nice 4l:) ....its a 1977 850cc but the brakes are almost non-existant !
are the wheel cylinders the same for all the 4's ?, ie the 850's and 1100's ?

Think I am going to have some open wallet surgery to do :( found I have no speedo cable as the miles are not clocking up but more worrying there is no needle on the clock anyway! no temp gauge working, no screen wash pump , heaters not working but there is a switch there :) rear light lens are faded almost back to clear plastic :( The fresh air vent on the front is not connected to the opening lever handle thingy :(
HELP any one have some spare's for sale

Photo's will follow as soon as the rain stops !:(

Nice to have one more 4L in the team-especially another Mediterranean one!

There is no need to worry about your 4L's minor faults...
-even if speedo needle was there, it would probably be bent from the hot climate, so the speedometer would have to be repaired anyway.
-no 4L had a temperature gauge as standard.
-original mechanically operated screen pump managed to push a tiny bit amount of water out of the jet, so almost inexistent anyway.
-You don't need a heater in such a hot climate, do you?
-For the same reason, you will find that you have the fresh air flap open all of the time, so no need for operating lever...

However, if you want your newly acquired 4L to work as it did when it left Billancourt, here is some advise:

-Brake cylinders are the same for all models up front, but are handed. Rear ones were physically the same between models and sides, but three different diameters were fitted depending on vehicle type and build date. When properly functioning, brakes should be adequate for the 4L's low weight. If the car has been neglected or stood unused for some time it's best to start with a brake system overhaul, this means new wheel cylinders and hoses, new master cylinder seal kit, new good quality brake fluid, and a thorugh check of shoe and drum condition and wear. I can help you with any parts you may need, except for the handbrake cables.
-I suppose you car is RHD, so you can try to source a cable in the UK. Even if you can't find it, any instrument specialist can make it. The same goes for the speedometer. If everything else fails, I can provide you with a good used needle.
-Screen wash pump is the same as in the 2CV, available from 2CV parts specialists worldwide.
-If the rear lenses are not broken, go to a modelling shop and ask for Humbrol's 1322 (Clear Orange). 2-3 coats on the indicator lenses are enough to bring them to as new standards!

Thanks for that I may take you up on the offer of parts but am about to start on the brakes tomorrow so will let you know what I find !
The fun begins !

rear wheel cylinder leaking badly and also new shoes needed along with the hoses :(
I have a new design on my 10mm ring spanner now after I put it to the grinder to get the brake cylinder off ;)
