Brake Light Switch

The brake light switch on my 76 L needs adjusting. The brake lights do come on, but only at the very bottom of the pedal travel. The master cylinder has the switch located at its outer end with no obvious means of adjustment. At the pedal end, I have taken up any play by adjusting the length of the pedal rod with no improvement. Neither of my workshop manuals cover adjusting this switch, so any advise from the forum would be very helpful (MOT next week!).
 
I think the switch is pressure operated. Certainly when you unscrew it a load of brake fluid falls out. I'm not aware of any way to adjust it if it takes too much pressure before it switches.

They are fairly standard though. The local motor factor ought to be able to get one. Otherwise internet search, eBay, or even Renault. I suspect the Renault one is metric so the old British stuff won't fit.
 
Something worries me - you said it comes on at the very bottom of the pedal travel. I think this is a single circuit system so just how far does the pedal go down before the brakes work? Also remember that there does have to be some play in the pedal rod.
Are all the brakes adjusted properly? Is all the air out of the system? I doubt if the switch is at fault as they are usually very reliable. Is the brake pedal spongy?
 
I mean to say that the brake light does not come on until you brake heavily, appling more pressure than I tend to use unless I am stopping from speed. The brake system is fine, & free from air. I seviced the whole system last year replacing the fluid, hoses and shoes.
I have adjusted the pedal rod slightly as there was some excess play in the pedal, but I was careful to check that this did not cause the wheels to bind.
Perhaps I just have a faulty switch? I did'nt realise it was pressure operated, and most cars have some adjustment here.
 
Sounds like the switch is faulty if everything else is ok. There could just be some dirt in it so it may be worth removing it and blow it out with high pressure air. If that doesn't work then buy a new one.

just to add that i ordered a new switch for my yellow peril last week and silly me forgot that early 4s had hydraulic switch which is not what i wanted !
no use to me was only £5 so let me know if you cant get one and i will post it to you
 
It is normal for the early pressure operated switches to work like that! It's just its principle of operation.
 
Found an old stock switch on ebay, and now all is well in the braking department. Thank's to everyone for there help.
