Brake Overhaul

I need to overhaul the brakes as there are none at the moment

I have a 1983 TL 845cc with front and rear drums. The photo beneath is the front (notice the wear :? ).

What would you recommend to change? Is it best to change the shoes, springs and cylinders. I measured them as 200mm diameter. What parts do I need to look for - there seems to be loads of different types out there.

I should also change the flexible pipes too, also handbrake cable, anything else?

cheers

If the car has stood unused for some time the wheel cylinders may have seized. Replace all four of them, as they are easy and cheap to obtain. Front ones are handed (left-right), rear ones are symmetrical, but as some 3 different bore diameters had been fitted, check carefully that you get the correct ones.

For the same reasons it is wise to replace all brake hoses, too.

Shoes can just be cleaned and re used, if not soaked with brake fluid or beyond wear limit.

Springs and shoe fixing clips are not essential to replace, except if being broken or missing.

Handbrake cables can be checked for freedom of movement, fraying etc. If you need to replace one of both, check length carefully as various types have been fitted.

Check brake drums for scoring or excessive wear (indicated by a marked ridge on the places that brake shoes do not rub).
If you are going that far, always replace the master cylinder seals.

again if you try le bon coin you often find a 'set' which includes springs, cylinders & shoes, it's 'normal' practice at french garages to change the lot ! as regards the puller, the garage trade use a reverse hammer, pity your not closer or I could lend you mine...

Cheers for the info.

I just took off the passenger side rear & front drums to check the sizes. Rear is 160mm and the front 200mm. I have checked the various part sites and assume either Valeo or Bosch are OK replacements for the complete kit (including cylinders). And I assume they are Bendix. Is this OK :?:

I also took off the flexibles and the rear is 260mm and from another thread on the forum took the part number as BFH1091 and front is 510mm being BFH4217.

If this is all correct I think I am ready to go on the parts order (along with my water pump ordered off Bon Coin and my Alternator, being ordered from Norauto) A couple of other bits and bobs and should be good to go for the Contrôle Technique.
:D

i would go for changing all braking components on car.
Recently have bought front and rear brakes for my GTL and it was very cheep.
I have decided to go with ATE brand due to previous good experience.
two frond discs, disc pads for both front wheels, two rear brake cylinders, rear brake shoes for both wheels and all new spring have paid little bit less then 100€

Also, i have give to made front and rear stainless steel flexible pipes at local garage that works on all different types of hydraulic.
They make pipes according to sample that you give them
cars in national rally championship use they flexible pipes. So i think that they will do just fine in my GTL
this pleasure cost me some 50€.

But now i thing that i am pretty safe with brakes on road :)

Some times i go to french web page oscaro.com to look for available parts. And they seems to be quite good with prices. Unfortunately they do not have shipping out of France

Hi R4 friends,

I just dismounted the front drum brakes on my 850 cc. I removed brake shoes and their springs, handbrake cables and hoses, however I can´t loose the brake cylinder screws, because they are hardly reachable. There is a special spanner needed? I should remove the backing plates also, because the eccentrics are immovable. So I pushed the shaft back and released the four nuts on rear backplate side, but I can´t find a way, how to remove the hub and backing plate.

So please can you advise me, how to do that?

Greetings from cold Prague
Pavel :)

I am just about to order the brake kits for my 4TL.

But I am not sure on the model and my car is registered in 1983 but has front and back drums (did they change to discs on the front at some point:?:).

I have measured the drums and they are 160 on the rear and 200 on the front. Would these two kits below be OK. I have asked Melun but they do not seem to respond via email and my French is not good enough to call them to ask technical stuff .

My oval identification badge is 1123 2351424 (is this last number the chassis number:?:)

the parts look correct, and a good price ! I checked at oscaro.com and they are more expensive. though your van is reg 1983 it's prob a 1982, discs were fitted in late 82 onwards

Great, thats what I thought.

I know the prices are the best I have seen, specially with the €12 discount card.

My water pump arrived and my alternator so it looks like a busy weekend coming up.

Cheers for the help
Ian

Found out why the Brake Kits are so cheap - Because they are not available.

Funnily enough though, all the individual parts are available but not in the kit. Hmmmm... sounds a little dodgy to me.

I have a 1983 850 as well. Drums on all wheels but the funny thing is that my front brake cylinders are 24mm. Haven't done the back brakes yet. I get all my parts from Der Franzose in Germany.
Your 22mm cylinders cost 22Euro but the 24mm are only 18Euro
