need some help to replace rear brakes there worn down, I've had a look and found part number Bendix 158A5P on shoe it's a R4 1988' model van all web site's i go on only seem to go up to 86' model's and the Bendix site keep's closing down my AOL, do you no if bendix or EBC or other have replacments many thank's Gav.

I checked through the Bendix site but they don't appear to list the R4 or the part number. That's not to say they don't still make them. Might be worth giving a Renault dealer a try. Otherwise do they have motor factors (parts suppliers) over there?

Seems there was a choice between Bendix and Girling rear brakes. I can't imagine they made any changes to the braking system after 1986. (But I don't have any info for cars build later than that).

Do go to a renault dealer as they will sell you the 'kit' which also comes with new fixing springs, clips etc. Why not overhaul the rear cylinders at the same time, or fit new ones.

Steve

thanks clementine & steve! I've had a bit of luck found an outlet here which will supply the pair as Steve suggested, there part of a supermarket chain a bit like halfords, just gave them the Bendix part number and there's no problem for 95 euro's just got to fit them myself uuugh!( any step by step pic's you no of!) I have this in built fear when it comes to brakes DIY stuff I can play around with 4hp compressers's and moters but brakes!

just for the record my local garage quoted me 400 euro's and renault main dealer just up the road 450 euro's plus this and that!( to fit ) bosch part's. and I thought a little french car in france would be as cheap as chips to run! at least I'm learning thanks again.

One vague idea I once had was to change my name to Claude and move over to the South of France to set up a Renault 4 dealership in a tatty old barn. If I can charge 400 euros for fitting a set of brake shoes I might just do it.

Can't think of any step by step pictures, but I did once chop the end of my finger off with a set of F6 van rear brake shoes. I was using pliers to fit the springs and they slipped off. Nowadays I try to prise the shoes off the backplate with most of the springs still attached, and remove the springs once the tension has come off them. Can't remember if this is possible on the 4 (as I haven't done any since the finger thing). So long as you do them one side at a time you'll have the other side to look at when you need to see where the bits go.

I was just a bit gob smacked when I got these quotes as you can imagine,
my thoughts on this have me thinking that you dont' see many old cars on the road in france proberly not much older than ten years,

maybe theres not the interest with older car's, most of the young lads a lasses seem to be happy with there modern hatchback's, yes theres the odd 1940's classic you will see on a sunday afternoon, but it seem's its in with the new and out with the old as soon as possible,

Perhap's thats why older parts are more difficult or expensive to get, anyway clementine I've got the tatty old barn and with your brains and my tea making skills will go a long way!
