brake spring tools

I nearly had a hernia yesterday trying to re-attach the big spring on my brake shoes. I'd be very interested to see some of the homemade tools that some of you might have invented for this purpose.
I used a long nosed pliers but I'm sure there are more ingenious ways of doing it.

Hi....i cut a slot in an old screwdriver last night....still fidley but worked fine..

No what you mean though...what a stupid idea

Yea, I used a long nosed pliers to hit the end of the spring and than I levered the pliers by a bigger screw-driver into the hole. The screw-driver support on the hub. The more incurvate end of the spring take into pliers. When you hit the spring at the edge of the hole, than get in the hole by the screw-driver.

Greetings from sunny and wam Prague. Pavel :)

A pair of small locking pliers. One to hold the end of the spring you poke through from the back. The other to pull and push the other end into place, grip it near the spring end of the straight part of the spring.

Watch your knuckles.

thanks for your help! I think the screw driver with a slot for taking the spring off and I'll try all methods this weekend when I tackle my next wheel.

Don't worry I've already learned my "knuckle" lesson!

For many years I use a slim screwdriver. If you hook the brake spring over it, and insert its tip in the brake shoe hole, then push the screwdriver in the direction of the arrow, you will see the end of the spring slide over the screwdriver and neatly dropping in the hole.
