brakes

The best place to buy them is from a Renault dealer. Their UK price is about £35, and they come with a fitting kit including the springs and clips. It's the fitting kits that can be difficult to find from other motor parts dealers.

There are 2 different types - Girling or Bendix, and you need to buy the correct type for your car.

Malcolm and le chat, thanks for that info.I have a superb supplier and garage down here but as the shoes are drilled for rivets, and I have time to fiddle with things mechanical, just thought it would take me back a few years, to do it the hard way! Merci.

Blimey - that's keen. People rarely replace the linings by themselves these days and I'd assumed they had become obsolete. But there are companies still advertising them. A quick google UK search brought up http://www.trimat.co.uk/ that sell "industrial and marine linings". You might find something there th8at's the right diameter.

I'd be very surprised if linings were still available for the early 4s - there's been no market for them for the last 30 years!

Here it is very common to re-line brake shoes...although Renault officially supplied linings that were pre-cut to length, brake specialist use lining they have in coils, and cut it to specified length. I don't think it is possible for a DIY mechanic to rivet the linings because special steel rivets are used, and a heavy duty rivet press.

Hi. Angel, just knew that somewhere linings would be available . The existing shoes on my 1982 GTL are pre drilled for rivets. I have also come across linings sold in strip form in South Africa. Rivets originally were made of either brass or copper and did not require any special equipment other than a sturdy ball end hammer to secure, as linings normally were suppled already countersunk. However, another leap into the 21st Century, I am off to order a set of shoes from my local garage. Thanks to all for feedback.
