On the way to town this afternoon, my car started cutting out and jerking, the same symptoms as if I was driving with the choke pulled out and driving on too rich mixture.
As I had just reset my points gap last weekend, I thought that perhaps I didn't tighten them properly and they had closed.
In the supermarket parking lot, I reset the points gap. It started perfectly and 200 meters down the road it came to a complete stop at the traffic circle and wouldn't start up again.
When I opened the bonnet, there was a very strong petrol smell and a lot of fuel dripping from the carb.
Thank goodness my emergency tool kit is up to date. I did it in October last year, you can see my post here,

i removed the air filter and bracket, removed fuel and air hoses and then the 5 screws holding the top of the carb. When I lifted the top of the carb off I found the fuel float lying loose. No idea how that could have happened, but anyway I think it wasn't closing the needle valve so fuel just poured into the carb and caused it to overflow.
So anyway, 30 minutes later, when I put everything back together, she started first time and drove 15Kms back home without any more hiccups.
And on the way home, I silently thanked this website, and Malcolm, and all the people who contribute to it and have helped me with problems in the past. It's the first time that I've done such a major repair on the highway and I'm very grateful for what I've managed to achieve.
