I've uncovered quite a lot of rot in the rear chassis, around the fuel tank area. it's in the bottom and sides of the chassis, I've remved the outer skin of metal on the sides and bottom and cleabed and treated the problem, my question is, if I weld 2mm plates to the sides will the chassis fit back in or will it be to tight? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer me:)

I have used 1,25mm thick cold rolled mild steel to do rear crossmembers.

Here are some thoughts about the rear suspension mount area: http://www.renault4.co.uk/gordini-inner-suspension.htm Originally they were double skinned but I tend to replace with a thicker single skin. The jig and alignment is important to stop the car from leaning afterwards.
Thanks for taking the time to reply Malcolm, your help is appreciated. My friend is trying to help me with an old clapped out weling machine!! Today he seems to have made the probleem worse, more holes etc, I'm worried that he may warp the chassis thus not being able to line up the bolts etc. Looking at the pics do you think I could get away with retreating the area and welding 3 new 2mm panels over the existing chassis?photo 1 (11).JPG photo 1 (11).JPG photo 3 (32).JPG photo 1 (12).JPG
