carb problem Zenith 28IF

i've not been able to start my '67 TL since i put a new head gasket on last year....i think the carb may be at fault

i know that the pump is supplying fuel to the carb and i've stripped the carb down and reinstalled

when i look into the carb, should i see fuel squirting out of the brass jet near the choke plate or out of the 2 holes (which point upwards) further down the carb, when i'm cranking the engine?

also, when i crank the engine, with the choke fully applied, the choke plate oscillates (i.e. the plate opens and closes)....is this normal?

If you spray starting fluid in the carb (or pour a teaspoon of petrol) does it fire? If yes, it is carburettor related, otherwise start searching elsewhere.
What you describe with the choke plate is not normal, seems at least that one or more valves are not closing properly, or compression is lost between two adjacent cylinders. Have you checked compression?

**I had and still having this problem with my R4, bottom nozzle gets stuck after every trip, its not dust or rust, its slimy waterbased rust or hartz from petrol tank/remains of the very old petrol. Petrol has been cganged now twice.

Yes its a Zenith 28IF carburettor.

thanks Angel, no it doesn't fire with starting fluid....i'm sure i've done comp test, but i'll do it again

Stick to the spark

My Dad always said "check the spark first". As much as I wanted him to be wrong, he has never been. For me

carb problem

i think you were right, Melc, i had fitted NOS points that were about 40 years old i reckon, and they had oxidised over....that and a carb which was reluctant to prime. She fired up today and ran as if nothing had happened!
