Hello everybody.
It may seem strange for some one living in France for 25yrs,to be joining
an English forum for info!?
Let me tell you why. I want to compete again in UK(BTRDA British trials
championship)and the RAC/MSA regulations state that the vehicle used
must have originally been manufactured in good old blighty!
I am just finishing a Relient Rebel for class3.

I hope Ive got that right!?
Now I want a vehicle for class 2(front wheel drive/front engine)
Successfull cars include 1.2 Nova/volks Golf&AX GT.
So what I have in mind is a transverse engined Renault 5 with a 4GTL 1108cc
high torque/low revs motor . I remember years ago a friend in Strasbourg
let me play with his 4GTL. I think the motor developed 32bhp @4000rpm
but had unbelievable torque! Even though it had a very high diff you could not stall the engine.
So I am hoping to locate a transverse R5 & a good 4GTL High torque motor
c/w small carb etc! Also to find out wheather there are any complications
in what I want to do. Thanks to any member who takes the time to help me
out. Wouldnt it be nice to have a R 5/4 surprising a few people!?

Hello John, welcome to the forum. I see you are in Brittany, I have a friend who buys and sells old cars and has his business not far from you at Dolo. Please send me a pm if you would like his details. I'm fairly sure he could help you find what you are looking for.

Regards Brian.

The R4 engine won't fit directly into the R5 - pulleys are at the wrong end. But any of the R5 engines would be good. The main difference between the 1108cc engines is the carburettor is slightly bigger on the R5. This makes the car much more useable. The R4 was strangled with a small carburettor but I've not found any advantage over the R5 carburettor.

coincedence?

Hello cornish 4 I will send you a PM.
If yr pal has the initials FK on Jugon hill,he was my best man at my
2nd marraige over 20ys ago!? Ive got quite a few old cars and ex wives, goes
with the life style!!!
Thank you Malcom for yr knowledge.
What I do know is that the 4GTL 1108 version had a special cam, high comp small valve head & of course the small carb that made it gutless. However the small diameter inlet ,increased the venturi speed & thus the torque at just over tick
over.(where I want it just like a diesel) Are the camshafts interchangeable
&the cylinder heads too in all 1108's?
What about a 1.4 with the small valve 1108 head &cam? Or am I getting
carried away now,?! How would you get that 'stump pulling ' torque out of
the 1.4 ?
I know some of the relient guys have used R5 pistons & liners to increase the
capacity, but had trouble welding/sealing tem in. So lots of things are possible if not always sensible!
