Has anyone tried to (Matricuilar) or register a Spanish R4 into French plates?...(I guess its the same for any EU R4...maybe)

Because its 1984 do I need a COC? and if so where can I get one?

I have read a plethora of websites that seem to contradict each other.......

Has anyone any experience doing this?

Cheers for any advice

Hi Spackers

I'm going through this nightmare at the moment. Do you need a certificate of conformity 'yes'. Can you get one for a 1984 car 'no'. The scheme was only introduced for post 1997 vehicles which comply with EU regulations on construction, use emissions etc. Without a COC you might get temporary French insurance but you certainly won't be able to put your R4 through the 'control technique' ( French MOT ) and without the (CT) you are unable to register the car at the Prefecture. So where do you go from here- well the saving grace is it's a Renault and there are still plenty of them chugging about in France. You will have to write to Renault Head Office (France) and request something called a 'Certificate of Attestation' which basically says that the car was manufactured to the regulatory standards current at that time. As I said being a Renault it shouldn't be too much of a problem - I gave up with a 1990 Toyota Lucida and ended up taking it back to the UK and selling it. Your local (CT) should accept this and then you can start the process of getting it onto French Plates. Also once your car is 30 years old you can apply at the Prefecture to have you car put into the category as a 'voiture au collection' this will mean you will only have to pay a small fee regarding environmental pollution tax and it only has to be put through the (CT) once every five years instead of every two - best of luck

Hi Claude

Great help Claude. I had read somewhere that there was a date cut off time. I am going to Carcassonne tomorrow and have a RV with the manager of the Renault dealership there.

He wasnt sure over the phone so I am going armed with all the details in the hope of a COC or now an Attestation.

It definatley sounds like I WILL find a way because the reason not keeping it on Spanish plates is the yearly MOT in Spain.

The MOT in Spain they put my car (Christine) through almost broke her in two! Its the same mechanical test for a Land Rover, Toyota truck and you can imagine how agressive that is.

Its all doen on a rolling road and they clamp the wheels in and almost split them apart! then they rev the engine to such an extent I had to run in and tell the stop, almost blew all the pistons rings and seals off!

I said "What the hell are you doing??"

He just replied "What?"

Barbarians.

Great news on 30 year old thing as well.....good old French.

I will report back on my findings.

Thanks again
