:shock::shock::shock:Hello I have r4gtl 1979 and my brake is drum and very Expensive I want to convert any car Disk Brake like r5 be suitable for modification please help me

I have deleted 3 duplicates of this post. You only need to post questions once. Please be patient - you might not get an immediate answer - some people will be at work at the moment.

For a drum to disc conversion on a Renault 4 made after 1968 you would need to use the upright, hub, brake disc and brake calliper from a Renault 4 GTL (Clan). If your handbrake operates on the front wheels you would also need to use the handbrake and rear brakes from the GTL.

I don't know if the Renault 5 part are the same, but they should fit (but there might be a difference in camber angle).

So if the handbrake at the moment operates the front wheels with the dash mounted lever, then you'll also have to change all the cross member from a GTL car to gain the rear mounted handbrake positioning.

The casting that bolts to the upper and lower ball joints and the steering joint, and holds the brake calliper.

I have a complete Dics brake suspension system, minus dampers on the GTL which I'm breaking soon, but of course its in England. As I've already mentioned if you want to change the rear brakes to use the Handbrake then you'll also need the cross member which the handbrake sits on. That will need all the rivets drilling out and separating from a donor car then you'll need to remover your own cross member and replace and reweld the new one in.

Can anyone tell why I'm not changing BB over to disc brakes?

I was looking into doing this on my 1979 GTL but it seems it is quite a job.

Have there been any others who have done a disc conversion, including the rear handbrake change.

It was a nice to have for me but not essential so if it is a pig of a job I will leave it alone.

(4 weeks before I start work on it......)

There are two kinds of front drum brakes: 200 and 228 mm diameter. The little drums might be a little bit weak but the big ones are at least as effective as disc breakes.

The axle stub - or as Malcolm says, the upright - from r5 doesn't fit. It's very similar an it can be mounted but the steering knuckle is different.

The conversion of the front end is quite easy. You have to change the complete axle stub including disc, calliper and brake hose. The master cylinder can be reused except very old models from the 60's.

The rear end is much more work, because you have to cange everything from the hand brake lever to the brake anchor plate. If you want to convert a older model where the seats dont leave space for a GTL hand brake lever, you can use the hand break lever and mechanism of a R6.

Someone swaped brakes to discs on my R4 leaving the hand brake lever as it was and adding some cables and screws between to make it work.

The previous owner made the rear brakes by putting the front drums there. The only problem was, that the center hole and holes for screw in the backplates were different so he welded that piece from a original rear backplate.

But it was a few years ago when things like that didn't bother MOT inspectors :)
