Chunky Tyres

Hi Folks,
I've seen a few pictures of F6 vans fitted with chunky tyres and I think they look great. I've looked on the MyTyres website and the chunky tyres (obviously) are winter/cold weather tyres. I'm wondering how these tyres fare in our summers when driven at 'moderate' speeds? and also what effect on driving/handling/road noise? And what about tyre longevity? Would be interested in hearing about your experiences,
Michael.

I only ever fit winter tyres to my cars, not out and out chunky ones but good all weather tyres.

I'd rather have grip in nine months of the year wet and dry and suffer a slightly higher wear rate than have tyres that are pretty useless come the wet and cold weather.

Most winter tyres are better than summer tyres below about 12 degrees.

I fit Pirelli snow tyres on the front wheels in bad winters. Road noise is increased and they have a catastrophic effect on fuel consumption (although this could partly be due to the fact that they are only used when we are snowbound). I wouldn't recommend them for all-year use but when fitted with them the R4 will cut through snow where 4x4s get stuck (although this could partly be due to the excellence of the driver).

I think my F6 qualifies as a R4 with chunky tyres. ;)

I have to admit that they are very noisy, but other than the constant hum when driving I experienced nothing bad about the tyres during the last 3 Years.
Good traction and no problems on wet surface at all.
They came with a 10mm deep tread and after 10k Kilometers they still have about 7.5 mm left of it.

Cheers,

David

Thanks for the feedback Folks.

Hi DavidN,
What size are those tyres and also - important - what brand and 'model' are they ???
