Hi All,
I ran into a slight problem.
The 1400cc engine I rebuild was blocked after the assembly.
Not having time and energy to investigate what was wrong I left the engine alone until today.
I took of the sump and undid the crankshaft bearings and the connecting-rods.
And hey presto, the engine turned round without any problems. The new piston rings give some resistance but it is turning round.
Then I tightened the crankshaft bearings and torqued them. The engine was still turning.
So It must have been the connecting-rod bearings. I torqued them to 30Nm and all was ok. But my workshop manual says it must be 40Nm
Can anyone Shed a light on the right amount of torque needed for this engine. Because 40Nm is to much. It blocks the connecting-rods on the crankshaf.

Needless to say that I used the original bearings and I kept them in the right place and marked the liners and pistons to keep them in the right order.
There was no excessive wear on all the bearings. I replaced the piston rings because there was some wear in the liners. After honing them the machine shop told me to replace the rings.

Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Tightening torque is 45Nm, according to Renault C engine manual.

It's usually one connecting rod that is causing trouble. Try to locate it by tightening the caps one by one to see which one locks the engine. Check carefully that the bearing shells and big end inner diameter are perfectly clean. Make also sure that all caps are fitted the right way round to the connecting rods - bearing locating tangs must face each other.

Thank you Angel,
it turned out that a put all the caps on the wrong way around.
Feeling like a complete oaf right now.
The motor is turning freely now.
Everything torqued up again and ready to go back into the motorcompartment.
