Cleaning the engine compartment

Hi Folks, the engine compartment in my F6 is a bit filthy and I was wondering what's the best way to clean it. I read in an old thread that steam-cleaning is a bad idea, but what about a karscher pressure water washer? and is there a recommended product to dissolve all the oil, grease and dirt. My first thoughts were to use a basin of hot water, lots of detergent and a brush but just thought I'd ask you guys first ....

I have hosed down my engine bay without trouble (cleaning off acid spills - long story), though I'm not sure what would happen with a pressure washer. I imagine the risk is damage to electrics(fan, alternator, distributor, coil) and oil seals (drive shafts, wheel bearings).
A pressure washer might help to get the thick gunk off, but there's probably nothing better than a soapy brush to get a nice finish.
