Clutch orientation

Good afternoon everyone.

I am intending to do a proper introduction of myself, however something more technical has arisen which is slightly more important at this time.

I have ordered a clutch from our local factors for my 1976 845 TL, however it is a mirror image of the part I have removed. As Mr Reno and others
mentioned in an old thread , the clutch all fits perfectly, but the steel straps that hold the driven plate to the cover are reversed, and peering into the centre plate it would appear that the hub damper springs are also reversed.

I have spoken to the factors, however their system does not go back that far; I have also spoken to Valeo Tech Support... and ditto. The chap I spoke to said they don't keep old parts books and technical info any more... I suppose that that is progress.

Would anyone have the correct part number for the clutch kit I need? Or even a kit I could purchase?

Many thanks in advance

Paul

According to the R4 parts book PR 1005 (1976-82) the part number for a complete clutch kit for an R1123 (845cc) is 77 01 461 379. Then according to PR 1104 (which goes up to the end of R4s) this number changed to 77 01 464 763.
I looked up Valeo 003387 on Google and advertisements for it quote the OEN as being the same as the . . . 763 number above. So on the face of it, it should be correct. BUT : the adverts also quote 77 01 461 380 (not 379) which is the clutch for an R1129, and this is an 1108cc machine (in which I believe the crankshaft rotates in the opposite direction). So Valeo may have got it wrong.

Thank you for such quick responses!

I agree that Valeo seem to have it wrong, the clutch physically fits perfectly (160mm dia, bolt alignment, no. and size of splines etc) but it is all back-to-front. Presumably this could 15944028891357603430335406256712.jpgcause problems down the line as the steel straps will be pushing instead of pulling, and the damper springs will not allow the correct take up of the power.

I cannot find a part number on the original cover or plate, other than "Verto Brevet" on the cover and what I assume is a date stamp of "13 76" on the centre plate.

I have looked on the usual sites like Franzose, Melun, Autodoc and Mr Auto etc but all their pictures when viewed up close seem to be the same as the Valeo 3387. I realise 100 per cent that images are "non binding samples" or "generic", but i dont want to order another wrong clutch and then have the palaver of returning it!

Odd...

Cheers for the advice so far!

Many thanks

P

Thank you Andy that's exactly the one. I will check out that link right away!

Makes me wonder, though, how many people are unknowingly driving around with the wrong clutch fitted in their car...

Many thanks

P

Just checked the listing, the cover is right! But is it normal to have 2 of the centre plate springs missing?

Cheers

I don't think it is - well spotted!
I forgot to post this photo:20200710_191352.jpg

Sorry - I didn't look at the eBay listing very carefully!

Unless i can find a complete genuine one (I need the release bearing too, that was the original problem: 21 years in a barn took its toll!) I guess I will have to keep trawling Ebay etc. The problem with doing that is, as Benchseat rightly says, the orig. part no's X-ref to the 003387 Valeo kit so all the sellers are listing it as such!

Thanks again Andy for posting those pics,

The hunt continues
