Good luck indeed.
Of course, you have come to the right place for advice.
In order to avoid duplication, would you like to reveal how much you already know, then members will fill-in the gaps.
Importing a vehicle yourself involves time and patience, but ultimately, is very rewarding!

You say that you have already aquired your Renault 4. We like pictures on here.
If you are planning your road trip to the UK soon, your heater/demister/blower will need to be efficient and reliable. We will assume that you are aware of your obligations to carry certain equipment that is not obligatory in Britain.
Example: when the overhead gantry matrix displays "Sin cadenas - Sin viaje" in Spain, you will attract a hefty - on the spot fine of €140 - if you don't have snow-chains/boots, for the drive-axle.

You know about NOVA?
DVLA Import Pack?
V.I.N. insurance cover note?
M.O.T. on V.I.N?

You ask if the process is easy? That depends on a person's ability.
My guess is, when you import your second R4, you'll wonder what all the fuss was about!

And when it's all over, dont forget to supply the UK vehicle index number to your IMTT ( Oporto/Lisboa/Faro), or you'll be held responsible for the Portuguese road tax on your lovely little car, for the rest of your days!

Here's a usefull tip (from Clementine):

The people to contact, oddly enough, are the DVLA. They are the one Government Agency whose service to the customer I have always found absolutely A1. They can supply information packs as to what to do.

An MOT is needed before DVLA will act. To summarise the requirements, you need RHD headlights (i.e. dip to the left) and a miles/Km speedo. This is necessary to pass the MOT, which can be done on the basis of a chassis/engine number before getting the UK registration (it's legal to drive it to and from the MOT without tax so long as you are insured to do so). Then you fill in various papers and DVLA give you an age-related number. You'll need the original paperwork to show the date of first registration of the vehicle in Portugal, otherwise the age will have to be certified by an enthusiasts' club on the basis of the VIN.

When I did mine I had to take it to DVLA so they could verify the chassis number stamped on the RH doorsill. This may not be necessary these days. My car had lost the paperwork so a bit more rigmarole was necessary.

To repeat: DVLA are extremely helpful. Try them first.
