finally got my LHD '67 TL started today....just a few more bits to sort....

the Haynes manual is not very clear on how to renew an outer drive shaft boot (left side), has anyone done this, & do i need to remove the whole shaft?

also, exhaust is blown...its an 845....are there better flowing , perhaps stainless, systems out there?

Adrian

Hi Adrian, I had a custom made stainless steel exhaust system fitted to my GTL by the local Powerflow agent. It was built on the car, not cheap, but looks good, sounds good, and should last forever. I'm sure you will have a Powerflow agent in your area.
Regards Brian.

cv boot

thanks Brian, i'll give them a go

anyone done the boot replacement? is it shaft completely out?

Adrian

It's a pretty easy job, I use microwaveable cv boots with a cone to slip them over the CV joint instead of having to separate the relevant parts.

To get to the drive shaft, undo the hub nut, then undo the ball joint nuts and bolts rather than splitting the ball joints themselves, (you don't need a ball joint splitter then).

I use cones like this one from Ebay.

Oh just make sure you put the gaiter on inside out before you put it on...!!!!

There are several different sized cones, measure them up and find a suitable one.

I'm lucky we have 3 different types at our workshop so just choose the one I need.

boot renewal

thanks for the comments...Pepper, the Haynes manual mentions a puller to draw the hub away from the shaft and then another special tool to pull the shaft back through the hub....are these needed?...Adrian

Nah, never had one stuck in the Hub, they normally just push out no problem at all!

They then slide straight back in again too!

I have just done the inner cv boot and I didn't need to take the drive shaft out, I simply pushed the inner cv boot over the top of the outer boot using the cone system that Pepper advised me to use.
The one I used was from Ebay Item number:140736358945 and cost £5.49 including the cone and boot (excellent quality) with free delivery.

Was easy then?

I hope you meant you took the old gaiter off and replaced the grease with new whilst you were doing it though! ;)
