Do you have photos of the engine or an engine number? and what's the capacity? The Renault 5 (early '70s to early '90s) was fitted with many different engines all with their own distributors. The Renault Dauphine ('60s) was a completely different car fitted with an engine that ran in the opposite direction to the similar engines fitted to later Renault 4s.

So all a bit of a minefield. Engine numbers or a photo would be handy for identification. Might be helpful if there is a manufacturer name and serial number on the distributor to let us have that too.

Is the boat a Weedo GT? Otherwise who was the manufacturer, and when was it made?

hello there i have an engine no its 1101
moteur688-42
the boat was built by carrington marine in the early 70s.
the nos on distributor are SEV 450 40229402

many thanks for any help grant

The 688 will mean it's an 1108cc engine. I don't have the info about the exact tune of the engine. Others on here might have the appropriate reference books. Otherwise a kind Renault dealer might be able to look it up.

Sourcing distributors is a bit of a pain - most used ones will have worn springs and broken vacuum advances (not sure if the boat will have a vac advance), and the vac advance for the Femsa is not available new. There are new Ducellier ones available - http://www.franzose.de/en/AlleShops/Katalog/Zuendung/ANR82116/ but not a lot of choice in specification.

hi grant ,

not being the absolute expert on renault engines (Go on post a pic ) it may actually be an R8/ R10 engine 1108cc or even an estafette van engine !! as used in a friends LPG !! forklift truck
is the water pump at same end as flywheel / gearbox / drive output- if so may be R6 engine ?

suggest that any 1108 distributor will work ok as it will probably be a low compression engine (duceller best type) can probably find you a R8/10 S/H one if new is too dear for you

ps dont think it will be easy to test for pinking on a boat :D

thanks steve
I use the Boyer system on my bikes.
Will give them both a call on Monday
Hopefully one of them will sort me out cheers Grant

distrubitor

Thanks Steve
Have sent my distributor to Aldon hopefully they will be able to supply a new eletronic system

Please let us know if Aldon can modify as they may be of use for the rest of us. They were extremely helpful when I dealt with them over a Mini distributor. They do away with the vacuum advance and modify the mechicanical advance by playing around with the strength of the springs and also the weights. The electronic trigger they use is very reliable.

Did you ask Boyer as well? The reason I ask is that when I first got my R4 the Femsa distributor was playing up so I designed new innards based on a Boyer 4 cylinder unit as fitted to any Japanese 4 cylinder bike. I asked Boyer to look at converting my distributor based on one of their units but they didn't want to know. I am still convinced it could be done.

Hi all
problem solved got a new dissy part no7821
from my local Auto center.Put it in place yesterday eve the old girl runs like a dream again.Pity i couldnt go eletronic. But the old points system should be ok as we dont use the boat as much as you would a car.
Many thanks to you all for your help
