Door seals

I have just fitted new door seals from Franzose but they are so thick the door will not close even with the hinges slacked off. Any tips for compressing them?
Allan

Someone else mentioned fitting new seals and the door being difficult to shut (but not impossible). They learned their shape after a few weeks which sorted out the problem.

Can you compare the section with a good section of original seal - are they much different?

The problem is, many aftermarket seals are solid sponge rubber. They are compressible, but not to the extent of hollow ones.

I also fitted new seals to my F6 - I trimmed them down a little (on the inside/glued side) - especially on the lower edge so that would over come this problem. At first it was a little hard to close the door and the bottom corner was stuck out a fraction but they do compress and keep there shape over time.

If you have already fittem them try a very sharp new knife and trim where neccesary.

door seals...where did you guys get them from please? Also could someone tell me how you get a small picture to come up with ones title name?

Are there any aftermarket seals available with a hollow section? Where do you get them from? It's a while since I cut open a seal, but I do vaugely remember a very small hole in the middle (or possibly it's the memory playing tricks).

Did you make any more sense of yours bantamallan?

The origan seals do not have a hole in the middle but are shaped to fit the door opening, I am compressing the seals and they are compressing slowly. I have not fitted the rear hatch yet but think the Franzose seal will be thick enough to give a good seal.

I can find here hollow door seals (and have some meters on stock). I had exactly the same symptoms when using solid seal, so I searched a little more...

How are your door seals getting on Allan?

I'm at the point of ordering some, and I'm in two minds whether to go for the Der Franzose ones and leaving them a month or two to settle in, or whether to ask Angel if he has any more seals with the hole inside. I'm not sure which would be better either - possibly the ones with the hole would compensate better for window lift at speed.

Did yours settle into shape in the end or are they still a problem?

They are slowly compressing, 3 doors now fit but the drivers door is still hard to close, I think some warm weather might help!

Your wish was granted (well it was a lovely day here) I think its going to be warm on Sunday and Monday too.

Thanks Allan. I'm wondering if standard type seals that compress to shape over time will have enough movement in them to compensate for the movement R4 doors will have under aerodynamic forcing. Do your seals compensate for door frame movement at speed, or do the frames still lift off at 50mph causing wind noise?

I also wonder if hollow seals will put enough pressure on the sealing face to avoid wind noise as sealing faces designed for hollow seals are normally flat rather than corners.

The car has a new engine so it has only been up to 55 so far but no wind noise or rattles even from the hatch!! The car has now gone to its new owner who is very pleased with it. Follow the links to see the car and some others in our fleet
