Hi to all the friendly R4 people,

since yesterday my good running R4 GTL has the flue.:(

During driving the dashboard bulbs are suddenly flashing.
Then the rear window heating bulb und the full beam bulb are on.

The Heating ventilator stops working and the direction indicator won´t work any more.

And now somthing strange. If the ignition is turned on the hazard warning flasher won´t work, only awfull sounds from the relay.

If the ignition is off everything works. Rest of the electric seems not to be infected.

I changed al the fuses to new ones... no effect. The fuse box looks brandnew no corrosion ....

Motor is starting and running, the rest of the car seems to be in good shape.

any idea ??
I appreciate every little help.

Greetings from Germany

Franz

Sounds like the earth wire between the alternator and front of the RHS inner wing is dirty or not fitted. Could be easilly tested by fitting a temporary earth between the body and the battery.

Thanks alot

thanks a lot Malcolm,

I check this tomorow morning and will report asap.

Did not Help

Hi Malcolm,

the desired action did not help.

I cleaned the contact, refittet with contact spray.

I put an additional cabel from - to chasis.

same problems again.:(

any other clue ???

Greetings Franz:wink:

I can't think of anything else. If a load of things are going wrong at the same time it's got to be an earthing problem.

The Renault 4 has funny earthing. The main earth from the battery is to the engine. The starter motor works when that one is connected properly. The second earth is from the alternator to the front inner wing and that is supposed to earth everything connected to the body.

I forgot to connect that one once and had instrument panel warning lights coming on and things not working like you describe.

I don't know where the earth connection from the instruments and switches is located. Could be that is the problem. Have a look for that, and if you can't find it post back here before lunch on Saturday or Sunday and I'll look at my car. Better still maybe someone else might know where it is.

funny earthing

Hi Malcom,

thanks again, i recheck everything on saturday. I let you know the result thereafter.

No success

Hi Malcolm,

back again,

i grounded everything , I cleaned and fittet every wire, no success, I now disassembled the Dashboard, everything looks like new, no corrosion at all.
Could there be a faulty relais or something that causes the trouble ?:(

greetings again,

Franz

Hi all,

after dismounting the dashboard again and spraying every plug and wire, reassembling everything....... it works..... ??

I think the little french clochard is finally back again.

thanks malcolm

greetings

Franz

Sounds like a big job. Glad the car is up and running again. Do you have any idea what caused the problem?

finally it works

Hi Malcolm,

i´m sorry to say, that i have no idea what caused the problem.

The inner wing mass should have been not the Problem.

It must have been an failure somewhere around the dashboard.

The strange thing was, that everything looked like new.

no faulty contacts or corrosion.

So thank´s again for yr tipps and help:smile:

greetings Franz

Sometimes you can fix electrical problems just by undoing and refitting a connector. A poor connection can develop in multi plug block, and by undoing and refitting it you are moving the contacts over each other and cleaning them. So that this is how you managed fix your problem just by taking it apart and putting it back together.
If the problem happens again, if you can do that to one connector block at a time and then test to see if it has fixed it or not. Then when you know which one is at fault you can tighten the contacts up or cut the connector block out and solder the wires to eliminate it completely.
Certainly looks like it was an earth wire problem of some sort though.
Some times we can spend hours looking for this sort of fault on a modern car!

It is the procedure described in electrical engineering as "wiggle it and hope" !!!
