Hi Guys
As part of my engine rebuild for my '79 4GTL I am going to install a new electronic ignition called 1-2-Spark. It is basically a black box unit with a sensor connected to the flywheel.

And now to finding TDC - the marks on the bell housing and fly wheel are obvious but what do they mean. Where should I be lining up the flywheel mark to - A,B,C or D. Any simple tips to make sure I am on TDC.

I will update this thread with all the info required for the install of this unit which is very popular with the 2CV crowd. I was going to put it on the Simca, but i am selling that so really pleased to be putting it on my new 4GTL and the best thing about it you can swap between Normal and 1-2-Spark very easily so comparing the difference will be interesting to see.

Also - Does anyone know how many teeth are on the Flywheel for this engine. Can't find it anywhere and have lost count too many times.

The Franzose site sell a Flywheel gear rim 117 teeth. for engine 810.02, R4 + R5 + R12

Is this the same as the R1128 motor.

The firing order of the cylinders should be 1-3-4-2, not 1-2-3-4.
I usually find TDC by taking the rocker cover off and looking at the rockers. Exhaust valve closing then inlet valve opening on cylinder 1 - TDC is in between the two.

Cheers Geoff, that is all sorted now.

Ok guys, some one must know how many teeth are on the flywheel.

In any case You have to change the ignition wires. Pale blue does'n fit Your red engin. Looks dreadfull.

I know, these were all they had locally. Will get it all running and go for some nice new higher spec ones.

OK - so I have counted the teeth on several different photographs of Fly Wheels for the 688 motor. (on ebay and le bon coin)

I have 117 Teeth as noted by the piece on the Fanzose site.

So I will weld a small tab on the flywheel (bottom of bell housing) that is 15 teeth BTDC so at 45 degrees in advance. The sensor will sit there.

From a french friend's "How to remove a bushing using bread" I count 117 teeth on an R1128 motor.

Cheers for that - so it was not just me counting around a photo :) I can't believe it is not mentioned anywhere...... it is now!! ;)

Hi Tripyrenees, TDC is on mark A, but set the flywheel mark halfway between the two red marks on the left. That is when the points should just be opening. That way works perfectly for me and then I adjust the distributor slightly until it "sounds" right
