electronic ignition

Boyer Bransden do a small electronic box that stops the points wearing out. Works well on my 4. However, if you want a fully electronic system then contact Aldon Automotive (Google both of these) and they may be able to modify your distributor. It will be expensive though!

Giovanni, can you translate us roughly what has been said on that forum in English? I am very intrested in fitting an electronic ignition on 2CVs! Also, a little off-topic, does anybody know a mapped electronic ignition that can be fitted on a 2CV? (even with hardware modifications-no problem).
The large-cap ducellier distributors were fitted on both 3- and 5-bearing engines, differing only on their drive. The inner components are the same, except for different spring rates to alter advance curve. I guess you can fit the electronic ignition, therefore.
I have not found a single reason why to do this on the 845cc engine, though. The whole system is very reliable if there is no play in the mechanical components. You should replace the condenser every time you replace the points to be sure they do not burn rapidly. I have found that points last 30.000 kms or more provided you clean them (2000 grade silicon carbide paper) every 10.000 kms.

Ok, please don't kill me for my bad English:wink:

"you need Renault Super5 or Clio (first edition) electronic ignition.
It has 4 or 5 numbered cables.

- Cut n°5 cable (black), if it exists. It's not useful.

- The n°4 cable (black), must be connected to ground (negative).

- The n°3 cable (violet)... complete it by a male pin. It receives the signal
from contacts (punte platinate). Distinguish it with blue adhesive tape

- The n°2 cable (yellow). It will be connected to key.
It's possible that there are two cables. Cut one of
them. Complete the other cable with 2 pin: a male pin and a female pin.
Distinguish them with red adhesive tape

- The n°1 cable (brown). It receives the signal from coil ignition (bobina).
It's possible that there are two cables. Cut one of them.
Complete the other cable with a female pin and distinguish it with blue
adhesive tape.

Well... Now, disconnect coil ignitions's cables and connect them to
electronic ignition male pins (Respect the colors: red=positive and blue=negative). Then, connect the electronic ignitions female pins to coil ignition (red=positive and blue=negative).

It's reccomended to redo contacts and condenser.
Select a dry location for the electronic ignition.

Who writes this article, doesn't taken any responsability from eventual dangerous."

I hope that I was useful. Giovanni

hello again ,
several points :) :) to raise here

the electronic ignition referrred to (thanks for translation ) is the type fitted only to 956 (C1C) and 1108 (C1E) R5s and clios- (RARE) 1985- 1994
the box in question is a small silver unit bolted next to coil, however they are only transistor assisted and not totally reliable
the normal cure has been to remove unit and go back to standard as box is aprox £70 which will buy lots of spare points/condensors instead

biggest problem today with running a car with points especially renaults is most dealers and factors dont stock any
if they do they will be poor quality ( assuming corect identification of femsa, sev, ducelier magnetti marreli etc)

15 years ago it was possible to obtain points which the heel (rubs on distributor square cam) was fibre , now most including genuine renault, are plastic which are soft and even lubricated wear quickly resulting in poor running because points gap then disappears after very little usage

opening points back up again will shift ignition timing (also affecting running )

moral of all my typing efforts, make sure you know which distributor you have ,get some spares - points and condensor as Angel sugested and be prepared for regular checks as r4s are VERY sensitive to correct ignition timing

ALTERNATIVELY as far as i know it is still possible to get optically triggered kits for the larger bodied ducellier disributors (Lumenition?)

hope this helps
paul
ps just reminded myself i think i have got a bag full of genuine points for older 845 small- ducellier models possibly SEV as well let me know if any one is stuck for spares

Reading this I hear you have trouble obtaining points and condensateur?
They are readily available here in France in supermarkets, Norauto, (similar Halfords) and Motor factors.
Probably because there isnt the "BUY NEW" mentality as there is in UK they keep there cars until they are ready for scrap mainly (in this area particularly)
If anyone wanted some sent over just ask but here they need vin plate IDs for part ID especially considering there are so many types

MY point wasnt that renault 4 parts arent available , just component failure at the roadside (in the uk at least) means over the counter replacement stock is very unlikely (even if identified correctly)
Mind you as long as your breakdown insurance includes recovery
I am sure you will get towed home along with all the modern complex cars with immobiliser/ecu problems

my comments were mainly aimed at recent R4 owners ,as long term experience running older cars will result in parts hoarding already

Hi.

Today I have installed a transistorized box to my R4 as Steve Hennessey has posted already. Is not an electronic ignition, but less wearing on the points is something good. Also you don`t need the condenser... And The box kit was cheap 20 Euro.

I have installed it, and the car runs perfect.

Also I have made the electrical connections reversible. If the box fails, I can revert to classic points with no effort.
