I have just received my haynes manual which I've been waiting for for a 2 weeks ! :D they seem to refer to 688 and 800 engines etc but I am unsure which mine is.

Many thanks, Matt:D

Matt, if your van is 1100cc then it will be the 688. Timing 2 to 4 degrees BTDC as the van engine is supposed to be lower compression than the GTL but use this as a guideline.

It seems that your engine plate lists:

Engine type: C1E (so 1108cc: I don't know what the difference between 688 and C1E is. According to wikipedia, the C engines were made in the Cleon factory)
Engine type approval letter: J
RNUR (Regie Nationale Des Usines Renault) identity: 7
Engine suffix: 18
Engine fabrication number: 000039412

I don't know what most of these numbers actually mean, but this is what it says in the engine workshop manual (part 77 11 077 267).

Other engine codes are listed on the R5 site at http://www.r5gordini.co.uk/wiki/Motorcodes

C1E is a simply code to know what's the engine. Newer engine have the same codification.
For Cléon engine the code is composed like that : letter1|number|letter2
letter1: it's the type of engine, C: cleon, cast iron block with wet removable cylinder
number: type of carburation, 1 for simple body carburator, 2 for dooble, 6 for injection multipoint with gordini's cylinder head ...
letter2: for size of cylinder , C:956cc , E:1108cc, J:1397cc
