Engine Mounts

Having recently replaced both engine mounts and the front gearbox mount, as well as the support bracket from the mount to the side of the engine, I still have quite a vibration from the engine.

The points and condenser have been replaced and the timing is absolutely perfect.

I've been working on the carb for quite a few days, thinking that my mix was incorrect, but I think its fine. No smoke, revs and idles nicely.

In fact, leaning over the engine bay, the engine looks quite stable. It seems to make more noise in the cabin, like a rumbling sound. I can feel the vibration in the steering wheel and the rear view mirror also vibrates. If I increase the revs the vibration is far less.

So now I'm thinking that perhaps the rubbers on the engine mounts are too hard. They're obviously after market parts and look a little plastic-like.

I really expected a lot more from them:(

Hi mojo. have you checked and made sure there is nothing touching like steering-stem to underside of outlet-manifold etc?
You might also try to loosen the bolts securing engine-mounts to see if you have tightened them too much..when you have
them loose try to jiggle the motor to see if someth' touches.also worth to check that exhaust-pipe isn't touching where it
goes through hole into fender.. and also that it doesn't touch the cross-brace holding gear-linkage (mine did)
Hope you solve it! -R.

I have been told of a situation where the engine is just touching the bulkhead around the bulge area in the drivers footwell on a RHD. Could this be it?

Thanks Jonathan, but I have a LHD, so no problem there. I did check and its fine.

Reid, you were absolutely correct:clapping:. I was so concerned about centering the exhaust through the hole in the inner wing, that I overlooked the space between the cross brace and the exhaust. It was less than 0,5mm, so with the engine vibrating, it was obviously hitting the exhaust.

I also found that I hadn't tightened one of the nuts from exhaust to manifold (the one closest to the engine)

Such a small thing and it kept me busy for days. Thanks for your help.

Good to hear you fixed it mojo! -I had Roffen the F4 on to Mot today-which he cleared with flying colors,so hopefully I can now
consentrate on breaking-in and get ready for France this summer... -Reid.
