engine rotation direction

I've confused myself completely!!

Having a look at the engines from the front, facing the front of the car and the flywheel, which direction does the flywheel turn on the 845 and the 1108GTL engines.

I'm looking at anti-clockwise on both but I seem to remember that there's a difference

The 845 was available with starting handle so the ex dauphine engine was modded to let you turn handle clockwise to start using dog on end of box
With me so far
The 1108 was left running the other way as the later box had no starting handle and with the extra power from 12v system deemed Un necessary
Summing up standing in front of car 603 747 845
rotates clockwise
956 1108 1289 1397 rotates anti clockwise
However most people would say it turns clockwise as they assume the flywheel on an engine is conventional ly furthest away from front totally ignoring renault practice of number 1cyl been flywheel end
Are you even more confused now

thanks for that! I don't have a problem with my 1108 because when I've had to set my timing, I've seen the flywheel turning anti-clockwise.
However, my new 845's engine was seized up when I got it, so I've never had the chance to see it working. And at the moment it's in a 1000 pieces. Now that I'm putting it back together, at least I now know which way the crank turns.

In your last paragraph, I think that you're saying that in other cars the flywheel is at the back of the engine? So if you faced it (from the drivers perspective) it would look like it was moving clockwise?

Am I correct in saying that when setting the timing, and the mark on the flywheel is lined up with the pointer on the block at TDC

the BTDC timing marks on the 845 block would be on the left of the pointer
and the timing marks on the 1108 block would be on the right of the pointer
