My starting key failed yesterday, a d I do not want to bother with changing the key block, since it is still able to switch on the instruments panel... I would like to install a switch in order to start the car.
Can anyone explain me if I need a relais or not and the related electrical connection scheme?
Any help really appreciated..

Hello there
I fitted an "engine start button" to my Hillman Imp. I will try to do a wiring diagram for you to see and post here as soon as I can.
Which R4 is it for please so I can see your existing wiring?

pe rsonally i would replace the ignition switch as if the staRt function has failed it may either Jam up with the steering lock on
at the very least that fail to start it will then be difficult to remove the lock if it is jammed pretty sure you must be able to get another one easily depending on year they are slightly different also left and right hand drive different

Paul is making a very good point, should be considered.

Mine is a 1991 r4 with 956 engine.
My other 1975 r4 has a button and works very well.
I already have a spare switch but I prefer not to bother with the work of dismantling the old one... if I decide to do it, what is the procedure?
Thank you all, guys!

Replaced the 'neiman' on our 1977 R1126 TL last year, or was it the year before. The keyswitch supplied by Franzose was a bit generic but infact it was a doddle to change. That said on our Ami 8 it all got a bit more involved so having made sure to remove the steering locking bit of the old one I just put a key switch and a start button elsewhere on the dash . From memory only two wires involved to each switch/button , no relays and no issues.

According to the post 1983 wiring diagram I have able to locate there is a relay already in the circuit.
Having seen this I would be inclined to replace the ignition switch complete.

There is no starter relay on any R4 ever made.
Before bothering to install a start button, bear in mind that the electrical part of the ignition switch can be separated very easily once the complete assembly is off the car. With a bit of patience, it can also be opened and its contacts cleaned, which should solve your problem.

Nice advice...
Any suggestion or tutorial on how to open the switch and what to look for in the inside?
thank you Angel!

When you get the ignitio switch / steering lock assembly in your hands, you will see how the electrical part is fixed. It is the round plastic bit where all the wires go. It is held on the steering lock with an aluminum bracket, which in turn is held by a small screw, if I remember correctly.
This rotary switch consists of two halves snapped together. By carefully prising it open you can see the electrical contacts which should be clean-if not clean them and spray an oil based contact cleaner. Not the degreasing type, as contacts will get worn in a short time again.
It is not too hard a job, just a little delicate.
