Hi I have an r4 tl 1975 850cc ,as we all know the silencer is underneath passenger side front wing ,has anybody any ideas how I could have the silencer to the rear ,also I do a lot of motorway driving ,would it be possible to fit a fifth gear , would this reduce the engine from reving on long motorway journeys ???
Thanks mark

I am not sure about rear silencer. Is there enough space underneath the body and rear axle for silencer on TL?

But there were some conversation going on about 5 speed gearbox.

I will link you to one where some figures are given for 4speed GTL gearbox and R5 5 speed gearbox.

I Think that 5speed gearbox will help lowering noise at high speed (above 100km/h) but not sure how much will be lost in regular drive when you need 3rd and 4th speed.

The 850cc engine runs in the anther direction as the engines that will support a GTL or 5speed gearbox. You'll have to do an engine swap if you want to have one off these gearboxes.
If you don't your car has 4 or 5 gears in reverse.

You can't use 5-speed gearboxes as Harbourseal said above, but I think there would be no problem at all fitting a rear exhaust from a gtl or a later TL... If you need some measurement feel free to ask, I have a '75 TL as you and a later 956, so I can shoot some photos for you. You should not have problems finding some used exhaust to try before buying a new one...
