Few questions from a newbie

Hello everyone, I am new on forum and new Renault 4 owner. :)

Yesterday i bought 1992 R4 GTL with 67.000km on it (made in Revoz, in Slovenia). It rides very nicely. Low nice idle, nice acceleration, no stuttering, low consumption (around 5.5l/100km).

I do have 2 problems though.

First, i found this pipe unplugged from carb. What is this? It comes from inlet pipe and it's blank on one side, on other side it should go to the carb. On the carb i have open hole. Should i put this back? What is it exactly? Some kind of breather? I fear if i put it back, it may destroy perfomance, idling..

The second problem is heater valve. The heating is working constatly. I can't control it by turning the control arm. I screwed the rubber arm down and try turning it by wrench, but it's impossible to move. Do you think heater valve is jammed or corroded?

Thank you very much!

Janko

Hello and welcome to the forum. We have a very similar R4 made in the same factory and the same colour.

I'm sorry that I can't answer your questions, but I'm sure someone else will be able to.

The pipe looks like the breather tube from the rocker arm cover : but it looks as if it has been deliberately disconnected and blanked-off. If the car is running OK, I would be inclined to leave it as it is.

Heater valves do seize with lack of use. It should be possible to find one that works, from a scrapyard. They are very simple to replace : remove the fan unit, unbolt old valve from the heater matrix, put on new one, clear up spilled coolant.

Hello and welcome to the club!

I can answer you for mater of heater control. Had same problem!

Probably it has jammed because some rubber inside got leakage.
But it is easy to fix it.

First you need to remove heater from car and take of valve removing two nuts (M6 think that they are)

This is how my once looked like

Remove small bolt that is actually limiter for rubber knob which you turn from cabin.
Not so nice picture but you will find bolt easily

After you have unbolted that bolt just separate two sides of valve. Use some kind of clamp.

And your heater valve is opened.

Now you must clean it with some sandpaper and change rubber sealing inside. I have found similar one in store for plumbers

Cleaned valve before reassembling

It would be smart thing to change gasket that goes between valve and matrix.

Have fun

Hello and thanks to all!

I solved the problem. I sprayed valve with WD40 and leave it for a day and then slowly turned the handle with grip-wrench. At first it was hard but then it got loose and it turns smooth now. I closed it and it blows cold air :) :)

Thank you Petak for your guide, it's very useful instructions. It may come in handy. :)
