fitting a car stereo in a renault 4

Is there anybody who can tell me how I proceed to fit a car stereo and the speakers in my renault 4 from 1985?

Thanks.

I have a radio console but I want to move the radio to below the passenger side dash when I do some other dashboard modifications. I'll sell you the console if you like but it's not in great condition and the postage might be very expensive to Spain?

My speakers are also in the doors, with holes cut in the cards.

You have to be a bit careful where in the door-cards you mount the speakers, as there isn't a lot of depth behind the cards. Also of course you have to find some suitably thin speakers, but it can be done, that's what I did too. I would think you should be able to get a centre radio console to fit your car in Spain, as there are still a lot of R4s over there, maybe try eBay.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm located in Tenerife and there aren't that many R4s around on the island. I have just bought this car today. What a beauty. Very little rust too as it hardly ever rains here.
Regarding the radio, I should be able to find a console to fit it in there.
But the wiring? How does this work. I've never done anything with wiring to any car. Is it easy to get behind the panels to fit in wiring for the stereo and speakers? Me being not that mechanicaly savy, should I still be able to do it myself?

Hi there, it's not difficult to fit and wire-up a car radio, but if you havn't the knowledge of working on car electrics you could get into difficulties. Remember you are dealing with a sorce of power and potential fire. Much better to get someone who is familiar with this type of work, what we call an auto-electrician. He will charge of course but better that than you have a problem with your car, you know what I'm saying. Once you have the console you can fit the radio and the speakers where you want them, and leave the wiring to the expert. It's nice to read that you have bought a car you are pleased with, welcome to the forum, you are amongst friends.

Hi Escobar, at the back of your stereo set you will also have a connection for your aerial if you want to listen to the radio.

There will be two wires for your speakers.

There will also be an Earth wire, I think they are always yellow/green wires. Just connect that to any screw that you can find that is screwed into the metal of your car

There is also a Positive wire which is usually "Red" Take that wire through a hole into the engine compartment, if you can find one, and attach it to one of the connectors that hold your fuses in place.

Better still, pull out any wire from the back of your ignition, connect the Positive wire to it and push it back into the ignition. This way the stereo will stop working when you turn off your key. If you leave your car with the stereo on, your battery will go flat.

Thats' how I installed my stereo and it works perfectly. Just remember R4's don't like heavy rock music, keep it gentle!

Most stereos come with an 'ISO' connector instead of loose wires in the back. If you can get a suitable connector to match this it will make a neater job. Getting to the wires in the dashboard is quite easy if you unscrew the panel below the steering wheel (maybe take off the wheel too). Most stereos have two Positive wires - one is designed to be always on and should be connected to the battery Positive; the other is designed to be connected to the ignition switch as mojobaby suggests, although you should use a proper connector! car fires are no joke. Always use a fuse, too - if you're lucky there will be an unused slot in your fuse box that you can use for the stereo.

As for the music, I recommend some French classics, such as Edith Piaf and the like.

Sorry IMac, I'm a bit out of touch. My stereo's about 15 years old and only has one positive wire at the back.
I do however have a fuse on the positive wire itself, between the stereo and the ignition.
