Are there any modifications to do if I want to fit a 1108 cleon engine in a 1970 car originally fitted with a 845 billancourt engine? The engine bay has the battery tray on the right side of the bulkhead. The model is of course a left-hand drive.
Thanks all...

You will need to put a dent in the centre right of the firewall under the heater for the timming chain cover to clear, you will need to modify the bonnet or get the 1100 one and you will need the panel that bolts between the inner wings and two brackets on the front of the chassis for the rad. Depending on what electrical system you have (dynamo or alternator) you may have to change a couple of wires, also the clutch cable. Also dont forget you will need the 1100 box and you should be good to go.

Rad mounting should be easy to find... already have the central "bridge" panel between the inner wings, the one on which the gear lever runs, no problem for the gearbox (have one but will try to find an enfine complete with gearbox and ancillaries). The bonnet is easy to find, much easier than a 70s one (that I do not have), so no problem I hope. Clutch cable and wires... will have a look...
The only thing that worries me is hammering the bulkhead to allow the timing chain cover sliding in without doing amy damage...

Thanks for your advices!

Remember that you will also need the engine mounting brackets that are bolted on the chassis, not just the rubber mountings. I have done such a conversion without hammering the bulkhead, using some packing washers under the engine mountings. It was fiddly in the end and I should had opted for the hammering method, though!
You will ideally need the complete 1108 exhaust, although the engine can run with the old exhaust and just the manifold to silencer pipe replaced.

Doesn't need much hammer treatment find a gtl to check position if you look renault pressed metal more than needed at factory

Those mounting brackets are the only part I do not have... but they should be not so difficult to find, I hope. I thought they were the same as per the 845 engine...

I think that should be adviceable to try mounting the engine on the car and prepare the modification before starting dismantling the car for restoring her... I shoukd have less bad surprises once finished. The work that bothers me more is the bulkhead hammering, but maybe I can find a donor from which cut and weld a part of metal...
Thanks you guys, I will ask your help more than once, I think, during this job...
Can be convenient swapping inmer wings too? The newer ones should have the right fixing for the central metal arm...

Have got rodeo r4 bulkhead in my workshop could do photos with measurements if that helps to compare as you could make card template

It is possible to leave the original radiator if you find fan for the water pump . I have a fan from some domestic ventilator installed.

Have just managed to take a couple of photos the black lines are to indicate the deepest points in the curve which may help you it is a maximum of 25 millimetres inwards from the flat plane if that makes sense

The small one? Finding a fan shouldn't be very difficult, earlier spanish engines were 852 cleon, but the bonnet organization was the same of billancourt ones.
I think that keeping the original setting for the engine should be better, big rad frontward and sensor-switched fan...

I have seen the 1108 radiator fitted over the steering rack, just as on the 845, on a poorly executed conversion.
Its own front mounted radiator is way better in our hot climates.

A note on your inner wing swapping comment. These newer inner wings will have the correct mounting points for the gear lever crossmember, but the right side one is also designed with the front-mounted battery in mind, therefore: a) if you don't fit the battery tray there will be a gap at this place, between the inner wing and the chassis rail, and b) the pressing for the coolant expansion bottle is located a little further backwards. It will be impossible to fit a battery longer than the typical "square" 45Ah type at the battery shelf on the bulkhead as the expansion bottle will be too close. It was too late when I realised this on my '75 - the battery is usually one of the very last parts to be fitted after a body-off restoration!

Another really interesting observation... never thought about coolant bottle and battery tray... I think I will keep in its bulkhead position and keep the original inner wings, since I do not have a battery tray available.
Why had you such a problem? On your 75 tl you fitted a gtl engine or just inner wings from a modern car?

Only the right hand inner wing from a '78 TL, I had no other choice as the old one was badly dented after a crash.
