Fitting tailgate stay

I'm just trying to fit a replacement sprung stay to the tailgate and am having a silly problem. Have no doubt I'm being grossly incompetent, but the spring is at rest when I fix it to the car. The spring seems to be fixed in place just by the nut holding it down, but then when I turn the stay to fix the bracket on the other end to the door, the spring 'winds up' and pops out from under the knot. Does anyone know what I'm on about?? If so, can you help? It seems an incredibly flimsy way of holding a strong spring, and for that reason I feel I may have something fundamentally wrong, like winding the spring the wrong way...

Hi Malcolm S
I took a couple of photos to show you how my spring is fitted. There is some kind of plate fitted around or under the centre bolt. can't quite make it out.

I watched the movement of the spring as I opened and shut the door.
The springs seems to expand as I open the door. Maybe that's unwinding?

When I close the door, the spring gets smaller. Wound tighter?

Hope that helps a bit; it was difficult to get my camera in there

Hope someone can demystify this as I have had exactly the same problem, the sod simply defies logic (my half baked version!). My old one tore off at the plate on the door and in the process sprung out with such force it banged a dent straight into my nicely repainted boot door. Cracked the bog and paint, grrr...lucky I wasn't near it as i think it would have caused a trip to the doctor....
