If you had removed the distributor gear, you have to retime ignition from scratch.
After bringing the crankshaft to static advance point, check which cylinder is firing (both valve rockers free) and note it. Now insert the distributor, at a position where you have maximum travel for adjustment (that is, the vacuum advance mechanism does not foul the cylinder head.
Now turn the distributor body counterclockwise until the points fiber tip starts to approach a lobe but hasn't gone over it yet. Branch an ohmmeter between the points terminal and earth (it should indicate 0 ohms) or a test lamp (should be off), this indicates the contact points are closed. Turn the distributor body slowly counterclockwise until the multimeter just shows infinity, or the lamp turns on, and timing has just been set.
If you are using the test lamp method, ignition should be on and all wires properly connected. Otherwise, ignition can be timed even on the bench.
Note that points gap should be correct before attempting to set timing, otherwise you may have to fine tune advance again.
Without turning the crankshaft, fit the rotor and check that it points to the ignition cable for the cylinder to fire noted earlier (#1 or#4). If not, remove all cables, and fit them to the correct order (1-3-4-2 clockwise) starting with the cylinder you have noted.
