French registration of new purchase!

I have just had my first close encounter with a Renault4 for nearly 30 years! We used to own them when our kids were tiny and had fun trips to Gites in France. Reminising with my wife over a glass of wine, she said how much she had loved her R4's. Then low and behold I read Jasper Gerard's article in the Sunday Telegraph (which I don't normally buy but had been delivered to our hotel room on a week-end away). Fate was at hand! On returning home I got onto the internet and found the joys of Clemantine's Garage...just fantastic, especially the technical tips, valuations, and of course Forum.

In the Renault 4's for sale, I immediately had a brief flirtation with Blanche, but not having read all the threads became confused over her increase in price, however, Mary her owner very helpfully directed me to "Leboncoin" and suggested I purchased one nearer to my second home in Normandy.

My experience with Leboncoin was fascinating, the site has a great selection of cars and I contacted 5. The first was an incredible scam by a supposed French navy officer away in far flung islands but represented by his friend who happened to have a car transporter business and would bring the car on a trailer to my door, but please send all personal and banking details and have the cash available etc. etc. I reported the scam and Leboncoin were fantastic, checked it out and had the ad removed all within 15 minutes. 3 others failed to reply, and the other after a false start we managed a rendezvous near St Malo and I bought a really nice, sound 1982 GTL with only 64,000 kms and all service records and recent CT.

Can anyone help regarding registration! I have read various web sites but would ideally like to re-register her in France where she will be for over 6 months of the year, I own my property in Normandy but am not a French resident spending approx 3+ months there a year....is this a problem? The alternative of registering in the UK seems to be problematic as I would need a UK speedo. Finally, I was planning, if registering in France, to insure her from there probably through my bank who cover our house insurance, I am assuming that this would also cover trips to the UK where I plan to keep her during the winter...any tips there?

Thanks in advance, Ron.

Registration in France

Hello

I am in the same situation as you and have succesfully registered my Renault 4 in France.

First you need a CT ,French insurance proof of address a gas or Electric bill, a certificate from your local tax de Impot. Take the paper work to your local Perfectory near your French Address fill in the paper work and you should get your registration in about 2 weeks.

Regarding Insurance take out fully comp as its a little bit more then 3rd party but your covered for wind screen cover. I insure with Generali a French company you can take your car back to the UK for upto 90 days at a time so long as you return to France for 1 day in every 90 days and they dont con you like the UK insurance there is no top up insurance you are covered fully comp in the whole of Europe.

Hope this helps good luke.

Hi, we live in Normandy near St Lo, and look after second homes for non residents. We have registered and insured several vehicles here not only for ourselves but also other people, and would be able to help you with this.
PM me for more information.

Many thanks to Ed and Paul. I'll try Ed's solution and sort out the insurance today. Thanks again for the help. Ron

speedos

Ron, hello again! I might be wrong but Blanche was registered in Scotland for a year or two and she has never had a mph speedo. I don't think you would have needed to change it.
