Front discs

Hi,

I just can't seen to be able to take off the front discs on my R4, I have the removed caliper, hub nut and disc retaining bolts but the buggers just will not come off. Is there something I am missing....? or more like seized discs ?
Any help much appreciated

Thanks
Gervase

The discs come off from the back unfortunately. The hub has a sleeve on it which goes through the two front wheel bearings. I should imagine there is a special Renault tool, but I used a slide hammer to pull the whole lot from the bearings. The bad news is that the bearings can seize on the sleeve and when the hub comes off it usually has the outer ball race still attached and with all the banging around you've been doing, it will have grit in it. You can remove the disc when you've pulled it out and make sure you remove all traces of rust from mating surfaces using an abrasive wheel or something similar. This is to ensure that the new disc will run true. Then remove any traces of rust from the sleeve where it goes into the inner bearing - really shine it up so it goes in first time. Make sure the drive shaft splines are very clean and free from rust - apply a little copper grease to them. Ensure the splines in the hub are equally as clean and rust free. Then clean the ball race and repack with grease. Push the sleeve carefully into the centre of the inner bearing ensuring it goes in squarely. Use a very large socket or something similar and hammer the hub back in until you have enough thread poking through to fit the hub nut. Then tighten the nut and it will pull everything together.

The alternative method is to remove the whole hub assembly and take it to a garage and get them to do the job.

The Mk2 Renault 5 is easy. Caliper off, remove small disc retaining bolts, clean up and fit new disc - now why couldn't they have done that with the 4??

Good luck

Steve
