are the front seats on a 1985 renault 4 changable left to right or can any other seat fit

Very much so - the driver and passenger seats are identical (other than the passenger seat being in better condition). I have 2 passenger seats in mine.

Have you carried out a detailed study of the position of the recline handle on the passenger seat? We shall expect accurate measurements and photographs in your report.
