Fuel/fuel pump problem?

Hello everybody, tough day for me...
Yesterday while driving my engine was turned off for few seconds and started by itself and then operated normally. Today the same thing happened. When it happened for the second time today I could not get it started. The engine turns but it won't start. My friend towed me home.

Now, I've changed the fuel pump but the fuel does not get by it. When I blow air into the fuel tank then the fuel does get through the pump but when the engine turns nothing is happening. The old and the new pump are behaving the same.

Help anyone?

take the pump off , put a bit of pipe on the inlet stick it in a jar of petrol and pump the lever by hand. if petrol comes out of the outlet its not the pump. Refit it, disconnect the carb end turn the engine and see if anything comes out, if it does then the carb inlet filter may be blocked, there is a post on the site about cleaning it
Just work through the system and you find will the problem
good luck
Allan

When the pump was of I've tested it. I've put it next to my ear and I could feel the air pumping through. The thing is that when the engine turns it seems like pump isn't working, no fuel is coming through but when I blow air into the tank the fuel is getting through the pump.

Tnx Allan ;)

I suspect there could be a problem with the metal pipe from the tank to the pump. If there is a hole in it the pump will suck air instead of petrol. Because the metal pipe is (or should be) covered with a rubber sleeve then finding a pinhole will be difficult. To eliminate this pipe from the equation, run an inlet pipe from the pump into a can of petrol and see if the pump works now. If so, you have your answer. If that does not work then see if the pump works with the petrol cap removed. If that or the overflow is blocked then a vacuum will be created and the pump won't suck.

having broken down twice recently just to remind you there is a gauze filter on the pickup pipe in the tank which can block up with dirt and fuel residue
problem then is tank needs removing for acess !!

i cheated and blew down pipe at engine end with compressed air to get going again but it blocked again on the kent run , fortunately i made an inspection cover when i built aluminium boot floor in so wiil do it properly before i go too far again

I am at work right now so I called my father to tell him all this, within 3 minutes he called me back to tell me that the car is runing. He removed the petrol cap and the car started, overflow was blocked.

Thank you Steve, much appreciated.

You are welcome. Many years ago when I was an apprentice a customer bought his Ford 105E into the garage saying that it kept cutting out. He would leave it a while and it would start again and run for another 5 minutes. The petrol gauge was also reading incorrectly so he tried to put more petrol in but could only get 2 gallons in. When we opened the boot to inspect the petrol tank, it was half the size it should be. The cause of his problems was a blocked vent hole in the petrol cap and the suction of the pump had cause the thin metalled tank to collapse inwards.
Remembering this case helped me to solve your problem!!!
