Hi All, just got an 84 r4 and the fuel gauge just stays in red. Where is the sender unit located. Is it inside the car? Would this be my issue?

Thanks Tom

The sender unit is in the tank but you have to remove the tank to get to it. check the wireing first there is a connection comming out of the l/hand longeron by the bumper bracket

Great, thanks all. Tank out and sender unit not moving fuel guage when i raise float. I have a multimeter, but only know how to measure ac/dc. Any advise appreciated.

Try opening the sender unit and using fine sandpaper to clean the resistor surface. It helped mine.

sussed the problem, float has a leak and was full of fuel, emptied and all good. Any ideas where i can get just the float, or would wrapping it in a plastic bag resolve?

tom

Hi there. I reckon modern fuel would quickly eat a plastic bag, and cause all sorts of problems. Check out www.franzose.de German company who do a large range of R4 spares. They have a repro sender unit for €28 and another for €58 which I presume is a Renault made one. I think that is the best way to go.

Regards Brian.

if you know where the hole is you can use soldering gun to patch it. just melt the place and try to get it sealed. i did that with carburettor floater

Its all back in place, if it fills again, which it will, then i will try melting a seal. Failing that i will just have to pay 25 euros plus 15 euros delivery for a complete unit. Thanks all.
