fuel pump problem

Hi New to the board so hello to everyone, hope someone can help, i have the fuel pump with the pin that operates off the cam and then onto the pump lever. i have removed the pump and checked that it works by hand and it does with approx 5mm play before you can feel the lever push up against the spring and start pumping (i have done this with fuel and this gets a good jet comming out) but when back on the car there is no suction it is almost as if the pin is too short or possibly excess wear on the lever and therefore not pushing the lever far enough to activate the pump.

the car has been sat for a couple of years but was running up to that point so not sure that the excess wear issue is correct,

any ideas on this would be greatly received

Try to blow / suck through the pipe that comes from the fuel tank, to check flow throufh the pick-up gauze. More likely than not, it will clog on cars sitting for some time (it's a tank out job to reach and clean it).

It's almost impossible for pump drive components to wear so much. However, check that when refitting the pump no excess gaskets or insulating blocks have been installed so as not to allow the pin to reach the operating lever.

Hi thanks for your answer but it is definately a pump issue. what is strange is that the car was running when parked up suggesting no issues with the pump,i have now made up a 3mm longer pin and now pump is working fine any ideas ???

My guess is that the pump diaphragm is very weak so it needs a longer pin to make it work! Best to fit a new pump as it won't get any better.
