Could anyone give me a rough year of manufacture that the reversing light switch would of been made a standard feature on 4/6 saloon/berlinas gearboxes, bought an engine out of a 6GTL(1983) to fit into my F6, same time from the same breakers a gearbox supposedly out of same car as engine, totally happy with engine but more I look at gearbox I don’t think its out of the same car, bought online and shipped, engine was a photographed listed item, gearbox purchased from same via message for purchase of engine, breakers had a good few 6s of different years, think they might of just had a few boxes on shelves and sent the 1st one that was labelled 6 berlina, looking at wiki in Spain the 1108cc was fitted to 6gtls here from 81, looking at age related photos Gtl’s had reversing lights identical to my F6 but the box has a blank in gearbox casing were as the F6 has a tapped hole in casing with switch for reverse.

Hi Ian
I don't know if this helps, and I have to confess that I don't really know the answer to your question, but the wiring diagram in the RTA R4 manual for 1982 models shows reversing lights. I remember that the really early 'long' vans (R2370/2430) didn't have them. My 83 F6 has them, my 86 GTL has the hole in the box but no reversing lights!
- I had a 78 R5 GTL with them; according to one of my R5 manuals, reversing lights were standard from April 76 (UK spec).
I haven't got a late enough wiring diagram for R6s to help, but this might be useful:

My Spanish isn't that good, but it seems to suggest that at least some R6s had reversing lights from 1975. I'm sure different countries had different specs - Spanish Renaults were always a bit different, and I think there'll always be exceptions.

No reversing lights on this 77 French TL:
Or on this 77 Spanish GTL (smaller engine; perhaps they came in with the move to 1108cc, as you suggest?).

Is it worth checking with the Spanish R4,5,6,7 club?

Good luck!

Thanks for reply and info Andy, if I find anything definitive through Spanish club will post info up on here, the Spanish tax laws meant that the 6 was supplied with a few different capacity engines before the 1108 in 1981.

If it's the right gearbox you can remove the plug and screw a reverse light switch in there. Don't know much about the R6, but for R4 of the same era the reverse light switch seems to have been an optional extra. Reverse lights themselves even more so.

The casings are the same moulding Malcolm, but the new gearbox does not have a tapped plug to fit a reverse switch,
