Gearbox replacement

Hello All,

New to the forum but on my fifth Renault 4 now. This one's a 1969 LHD 850cc - blue(ish) - with a sunroof. Running sound but having problems with (lack of) synchromesh in second. I was told when I bought this car that it had had a new engine and it has a 354-119 gearbox. I have managed to source a 354-28 from a scrapyard in France - free (he owed my dad a favour). So can anyone tell me if these gearboxes are interchangeable?
Thanks for any help and advice. I'm based in Swansea too so if anyone knows an r4 mechanic locally that would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance.
Alex

20150921_074608-1.jpg Would be interested to see pictures of the car as in 1969 it would have had a different gearbox completely not a 354 type either the year is wrong with your car which we can discuss later or it has been upgraded to the later gearbox
Parts book says yes both boxes can be replaced with same new box

Found gearbox book as well

Hello Mr Reno. Thanks enormously for your help on this. Looks like it will be a good swap (providing the replacement I have doesn't have synchromesh problems. . .). The model I have is a R1120 - so I guess it had the 334. The previous owner did say it had an engine change too. I notice you are from Lancing. Back in 1999 I bought a red renault 4 TL (but with an 1100 replacement engine I think) from someone in Lancing. . . Would that have been you?? I think it was a C reg. I drove it down to Le Mans one summer before eventually selling it to a couple in Hackney. I don't really know why i bought this one actually. I'd just let an F6 go too cheaply and was suffering withdrawal symptoms I guess. Still, for its age, it rocks along at 100kph. I did a five hour cruise from Salisbury to Swansea the other day and it loved it. Thanks again - i need to replace all of the window frames at some point so if you know anyone who has them going spare I'd be grateful.
best wishes
Sandy
