hi
we got an oil leak on our first Renault4 .Every time i checked the oil level it was below what is was and i checked on the tank and there was no oil on it ? so i don,t know how its going so could i have some advice on why its doing that
thanks

When you say that you 'checked on the tank' what 'tank' to you mean? Do you mean you checked the dipstick and the oil level was below the minimum?

Thanks.
Do you mean the sump? There isn't really an 'oil tank'.

So you think there's an oil leak somewhere, but it's not leaking out of the sump plug?

How much oil are you losing? And over what time period or distance is that?

Have you driven the car before you bought it? Did you drive it home?
Or was it brought to you on a trailer?

I do think that there is a film of clothed oil in the sump. (Tank)
If you remove the drain plug nothing comes out. The only way to find out for sure is to remove the sump.

If you're getting a lot of blue smoke from the exhaust, the engine is probably worn - rings/valve guides, for example. As your car passed the CT, this probably isn't the case.
Am I right in thinking that you've looked at the bottom of the sump to see if there's a leak from the sump plug, and it looks dry?
Have you tried running the engine, parking the car overnight, and then checking to see if there are any oil stains on the ground?
If your car has an oil filter, have you checked to see if there's a leak from its gasket?
Any leaks from the rocker cover gasket?
How much oil is the car using?

If there's no smoke from the exhaust, you could check to see if the pipe arrowed in this photo is blocked (I'm assuming your car has this pipe). It runs from the rocker cover to the carburettor.20190725_133903_LI.jpg

It'd be really helpful if you could post a few more photos of the engine bay.
Good luck!

Hi
Thanks for all your replies . the stump hasn't got oil on and when i put the oil in in the morning and the next day its at the mini level but we drive it in the mornings and evenings and it hasn't got an oil filter
Thanks very much

I’m puzzled.
There should be oil all over the engine on the outside. Or big clouds of blue smoke and a puddle of oil underneath the car if you have to fill oil every day.
please post some photos.

Hi
Thanks for your replies i've fixed the oil leak the bolt in the stump wasn't tight enough . yesterday the car broke down on the road so i looked at it and the petrol pump had come of and it wouldn't start so set the points and cleaned the jets and it worked .How could the points and the
pump came lose ? so i set the points and tested it and it sparked before it reached the lump . So could you tell me why it is doing that ,please .
Thanks very much

The points start to open before the peak of the "lump" (it's called the "cam" in English) and are at their most open when the points are on the peak of the cam. It sounds like your points are set properly. If you imagine the distributor cam as a circle, the 4 lumps (or cams!) are at 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees. If you know the "dwell angle" for your engine you can use this measurement to adjust very accurately the points gap, but you need a dwell angle meter to do this.
